Treatment of chronic wounds which take a long time to heal remains an important problem in animals. Generally, chronic wounds are studied as diabetic wounds, pressure wounds, burn wounds, venous-ischemic ulcers and arterial insufficiency wounds. The main treatment in chronic wounds is surgical intervention. Debridement is one of the methods applied for this purpose. Debridement is classified as surgical, mechanical, autolytic, enzymatic and biological debridement. It is aimed to accelerate wound healing by debridement, which is defined as the removal of necrotic tissues and the removal of metabolic debris from the wound area until living tissue in the region is observed. In this review, information on recent developments related to chronic wounds and their treatments in domestic animals have provided. Surgical, mechanical, autolytic, enzymatic and biological debridement methods and advantages and disadvantages of these methods have been given and the results of these studies have been evaluated.
