In this study, the effects of dietary licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) on some antioxidant parameters and organ weights in male breeding quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) exposed to heat stress were investigated. For this purpose, a total of 120 animals at the age of 2 months were divided into 4 experimental groups. The experimental groups were1.TN0-group at normal temperature (22⁰C) and fed with basal diet, 2.TN500- group at normal temperature (22⁰C) and added licorice root (500 mg/kg) to the diet, 3.SS0 -group at high temperature (34⁰C) and fed with basal diet 4.SS500- high temperature (34⁰C) and added licorice root (500 mg/kg) to the diet. Each group consisted of 30 animals and 3 subgroups. At the end of the 42 day, blood samples were taken by decapitation. Serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cortisol, malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant levels (TAS), total oxidant levels (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) values and heart, liver and testis weights were analyzed. The effect of licorice root additive on serum TAS level was found to be statistically significant (P<0.01). TNF-α, cortisol, MDA, TOS, OSI levels and liver and testis weights were not affected by ambient temperature, the additive and the interaction between the additive (licorice root) and the ambient temperature (P>0.05). The effect of heat stress was found to be significant in terms of heart weight (P<0.05). Although licorice root reduced the negative effects of heat stress numerically in this study, it is recommended to use different doses in future studies.
