This investigation was made to establish the effects of selenium on sperm volume, mass activity, motility, abnormal sperm rate, density and selenium levels in sperm samples.

In this study, 16 Morkaraman rams between 60-70 kg weights, were used. The sperm samples were taken at 1, 24, 48, 72, 120 and 168th hours after the selenium application in doses of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg. The sperm volume, mass activity, motility, abnormal sperm rate, density and selenium levels in the sperm samples were determined. The values of sperm volume at 72, 72 and 48th hours according to doses were 0.23±0.08, 0.10±0.05 and 0.16±0.06 ml, respectively; the values of mass activity and spermatozoid motility at 72, 72 and 48th hours were 0; the values of abnormality at 72, 72 and 48th hours were 52.6±11.8%, 100±0% and 74±2.8%, respectively; the values of spermatozoid density at 72, 72 and 48th hours were 0.43±0.08x109, 0.26±0.13x109 and 0.33±0.03x109/ml, respectively and the selenium levels in sperm at 24th hours were 0.69±0.021, 0.71±0.072 and 0.85±0.052 ppm respectively, were established. In conclusion, the selenium poisoning was determined to inhibit the semen production in rams.
