This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of scrotal heating on spermatogenesis, other semen characteristics and serum testosterone levels in the rams.

Nine Akkaraman rams were used in the study; three of them were used in the control and the others in the experimental groups.

Spermatogenetic features, reaction time, weekly serum testosterone levels and testicle size in the rams were recorded. The scrotal surface temperature increased (by 4.03ºC) with scrotums of the experimental rams were covered with wool-woven pockets. The pockets were removed after 23 days. Histological slices of the testes were prepared. In the remaining rams, semen characteristics were investigated for a next period of 62 days.

Parallel to the increase in scrotal heating, reaction time and serum testosterone levels unaltered. It was observed that mean semen volume (p<0.05) and viscosity (p<0.01) decreased significantly. Semen pH (p<0.01) increased significantly. Mass activity, motility and density of the spermatozoa (p<0.01) decreased significantly. Ratio of abnormal spermatozoa (p<0.01) raised up to maximum significantly. The testicle size (p<0.01) decreased significantly.

Histopatological examination of the testes showed that there were degenerations and desquamations in the germinative epitelium, but primary spermatocytes remained as normal.

The semen characteristics returned to normal 62 days after the removal of the wool-made pockets.
