This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of lycopene supplementation on hitopathological changes in rats exposed to sevoflurane. Wistar-albino rats (n=24) were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups as control, lycopene, sevoflurane plus lycopene. Placebo in physiological saline was given to animals in group control and group sevoflurane and lycopene (Lyc-O-Mato; 40mg/kg/d) was given to animals in group lycopene by gavage for ten days. After lycopene suplementation for 10 days, the group sevoflurane and group lycopene rats were exposed to an anesthetic gas mixture. Sevoflurane 3% (v/v) was given to animals in the vaporizer in 50% Oxygen and 50% N2O mixture (4L/minute). The gas mixture was administered for two hours. Then animals were euthanatized and necropsied. Microscopically, there were congestion, centrolobular degeneration and necrosis in liver and cortical necrosis, epithelial degeneration and necrosis of tubuli in kidney. This changes were more pronounced in sevoflurane group According to statistical analyisis by using the histopathological scores, the lesions were more prevalant in sevofloran group than sevofloran +lycopene group (P≤0.001). The results of the study indicate that lycopene supplementation was decreased histopathological changes induced by sevoflurane.
