Central venous catheterization (CVC) is an effective method in the treatment of intravenous therapy. Long term indwelling CVCs are essential for the supportive care of cancer patients. These catheters facilitate the antineoplastic cytotoxic therapy, the administration of intravenous fluids, blood products, medications including anti microbial agents and total parenteral nutrition. Three main classes of CVCs are tunnelled, non-tunnelled, and implanted. Beside the complications such as pneumothorax, hemorrhage that may develop during initial insertion, CVCs may also be associated with infection and thrombosis in the long-term. In this study, CVCs which are frequently used in oncology and their nursing were reviewed.
