Comparative Evaluation of Oral and Dental Health Levels of Children Under Care of Social Service Organizations and Children Staying with Their Families

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the oral and dental health of children staying in social service institutions within the scope of care measures and children living with their families, and to determine the need for treatment and compare the two groups.

Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on the oral and dental health problems of 398 children in the 2-15 age group who applied to Fırat University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Pediatric Dentistry and 65 children in the same age group that staying in the Children's Houses Site affiliated with the Elazığ Provincial Directorate of Social Services. It was carried out as a result of dental health screening. During the examination, the children's tooth decay, presence of dental trauma, oral hygiene and brushing habits were recorded. The data were examined with statistical methods.

Results: In clinical children staying with their families, the rate of oral hygiene evaluation and good oral hygiene was found to be higher than in the social service group (p<0.05), while brushing habits were found to be lower (p<0.05). Although the presence of trauma was not statistically significant, this rate was found to be higher in the social work group (p>0.05). There was a statistically significant difference in the participants' DMF-T evaluations (p<0.05), there was no statistically significant difference in the participants' DMF-T, PUFA and pufa prevalence evaluations according to their groups (p>0.05).

Conclusion: According to the limited results of this study, it was determined that the oral and dental health level of children staying in institutional care was lower than that of children staying with their families. Families have an important place in children's oral health.
