Objective: Neuropeptide alarin, known for its modulatory effect on neuronal transmission, involves in many physiological processes such as nutrition and water intake. However its role in cortical activity is not fully understood yet. The aim of this study is to investigate the possible effect of central alarin injection on cortical activity.
Materials and Methods: Fourteen male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups: Sham and 1 nmol central alarin. All groups were subjected to 70 minutes of recording under ketamine/xylazine (90/10 mg/kg) anesthesia. After obtaining 10 minutes of baseline recording in both groups, injections were performed. Another 60 minutes of recording were performed after physiological saline and alarin injection. From the obtained Electrocorticography (ECoG) recordings, analysis was performed on the total EEG power spectrum, absolute power, and relative power spectrum of EEG waves. Results: Alarin application did not alter total EEG power. While it increased the absolute power of beta and gamma waves, it also increased the relative power of beta, theta, and gamma waves in the total EEG. Conclusion: Injection of 1 nmol central alarin does not alter the overall effect of basal brain activity, but it has a modulatory effect on EEG waves. |
