Keywords: Rational use of drug, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy |
Objective: The World Health Organization reports that more than half of the entire drugs are prescribed or are obtained from the pharmacy inappropriately, and half of the patients do not use these drugs correctly. The aim of the research is to evaluate the Rational Use of Drug (RUD) knowledge and behavior of physicians and dentists who will prescribe drugs in the future or pharmacists who will provide drugs to patients, in the first year of their training.
Materials and Metods: In the survey, which was presented using online surveys of a web browser, first demographic information such as gender and age was obtained, then questions were asked to show RUD knowledge and behaviors, and finally the answers to the RUD scale questions were expected. A total of 359 medical, dentistry and pharmacy students were reached in the survey, which was kept open for 3 months. Those with a total score above 35 on the RUD scale were considered successful in RUD. Results: Two hundred and forty-six (68.5%) of the participants were women and 113 (31.5%) were men. The participation rate was 61.81%. A total of 12.3% of the participants, whose average age was 19.4±1.1, were on chronic drug use. The most commonly purchased drugs were painkillers. The RUD scale success average was 36.6±4.2. Medical faculty students' knowledge and behaviors of RUD were significantly higher compared to the students in dentistry and pharmacy faculties (p=0.002). According to the scale, female students were more successful than males (p=0.001). Continuous use of medication, paying attention to expiration rate, leaflet reading habit and not using medication due to advice from neighbors/relatives were the behaviors that distinguished those who were successful from those who were unsuccessful in the RUD scale (p=0.002), (p<0.001), (p=0.001), (p<0.001). Conclusion: In the first year of their education, students from the faculty of medicine were more successful in RUD than students from the faculties of dentistry and pharmacy. The RUD scores of all three faculties were above the community average. There were common behaviors between successful and unsuccessful individuals. In conclusion, as healthcare providers who will prescribe and dispense medicines, awareness of RUD should be increased and RUD behaviors should be minimally equalized in the long undergraduate education of medical, dental and pharmacy faculties. |
