Objective: The consumption of tobacco and tobacco products is the primary cause of preventable diseases and fatalities globally. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of tobacco and tobacco product consumption among medical students.

Materials and Methods: This descriptive study comprises first-year students enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine, Firat University. The study's fieldwork was concluded in November-December 2022, involving 175 participants. The participants' tobacco usage was assessed by an observational survey method. The statistical analysis of the study's findings was conducted using the SPSS 22.0 program. Statistical evaluations utilized percentage, mean, chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis.

Results: The mean age of the participants was 18.7±0.9 (min: 17, max: 23), with 52.6% (n=92) reporting as female. Of the participants, 8.0% (n=14) reported only use of cigarettes, 2.3% (n=4) only used hookah, 1.1% (n=2) only used tobacco, 2.3% (n=4) used both cigarettes and tobacco, 0.6% (n=1) combined cigarettes and hookah, 1.7% (n=3) used cigarettes, hookah, and tobacco, and 2.3% (n=4) participated in the use of cigarettes, hookah, tobacco, and e-cigarettes. Furthermore, 44.6% (n=78) of the participants indicated that they had previously experimented with smoking. Smoking prevalence was markedly elevated among individuals who tried smoking, hookah use, and had a sibling or close friend who smoked (p<0.05).

Conclusions: It is recommended for medical students, as prospective physicians, to be educated about tobacco products and receive appropriate training to lead the battle against tobacco use.
