Stapled haemorrhoidopexy is becoming the procedure of choice for the treatment of symptomatic prolapsing piles. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical results of patients treated with this technique in Medical School of Firat University, Department of General Surgery.

18 patients underwent Longo's procedure between January 2003-January 2005 were included. Severity of postoperative pain evaluated by means of visual analogue scale (VAS), complications and time to normal activities were recorded. Patients were examined with 3 months intervals and their pleasures were asked.

Mean VAS were 3.1±1.3, 1.4±1.1 and 0.3±0.6 at postoperative 2nd, 12th and 24th hours, respectively. Urinary retension in 2 patients (11.1 %), minor bleeding in 2 patients (11.1 %) and acute fissura in ano in one patients (5.6 %) were seen. Mean hospitalization time was 1.6±0.6 day. All patients returned to normal activities after 4.5±2.2 days. There was no bleeding, pain, incontinence or anal stenosis after 7.3±4.8 months (average following time). The results were described as “not bad” by one patient (5.6 %), as “good” by 2 patients (11.1 %) and as “satisfactory” by 15 patients (83.3 %). 3 patients treated for internal haemorrhoidal disease have first degree internal haemorrhoidal disease in control anoscopy. There was no recurrence in patients treated for mucosal prolapsus.

Longo's procedure is an excellent alternative ensuring early recovery and patient's satisfactory in treatment of 3rd or 4th degree internal haemorrhoids and mucosal prolapsus even if there was no sufficiently information about long time results.
