Keywords: Brucellosis, serum tube agglutination test, epidemiology

Objective: Brucellosis is a common zoonosis in many regions throughout the world, especially in Turkey. Infection is frequently transmitted to humans via discharges of infected animals or unpasteurized dairy products. It may lead to complications regarding different organ systems. In this retrospective study, it was aimed to understand the clinical and epidemiological properties of the brucellosis's: laboratory tests, systemic involvements and complications.

Materials and Methods: The clinical and laboratory characteristics of 81 patients with brucellosis treated in our clinic within an 1 year period were investigated retrospectively. Diagnostic criteria were standard tube agglutination test at a titer of ≥1/160 with symptoms suggestive of brucellosis.

Results: The mean age was 35.9±15.75 years. Overall, 86.4% of the cases had a history of ingestion of contaminated dairy products. 81.48% of cases were diagnosed in spring and summer. The main symptoms were fever, arthralgia, sweating, and myalgia. Increased C-reactive protein in 47 (58%) patients, increased serum transaminase levels in 19 (23.45%) patients, anemia in 37 (45.7%) patients and leukocytosis in 4 (4.9%) patients were detected. Osteoarticular involvement was present in 8.6% and hepatitis in 8.6%.

Conclusion: Our study didn't make novel contribution to the results and related suggestions that have been previously announced in our country. Brucellosis, which is a systemic disease with multiorgan involvement presenting with various clinical signs, is a common problem in our country. It should be considered in patients with chronic signs or symptoms associated with multiorgan involvement, especially in endemic regions.
