Objective: This study was carried out to determine the effects of sensory integration training on postural instability in Parkinson's patients.

Material and Methods: 22 Parkinson patients who represented the stage 2-3 according to Modified Hoehn & Yahr Rating Scale were divided into two groups as control and study. The control group received general physiotherapy; the study group received sensory integration training combined with general physiotherapy 2 times per week for 6 weeks. Patients were assessed with Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA), Parkinson activity Scale (PAS), Time Up and Go Test (TUG), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and computed dynamic posturography (CDP).

Results: While total and sub-group scores of UPDRS improve similarly in both study groups and control group, effect size was found higher in study group (60≤ d≤ 82). LOTCA total scores similarly increased in both groups but visual motor parameter improved only in the study group (P<0.05). Although BBS scores improved similarly in both groups, TUG and PAS scores were significantly higher in study group (P<0.05). When CPD results were analyzed, balance composite scores improved in both on and off period but this development were statistically higher in the study group. Also condition 5, 6 and vestibular system scores improved significantly in study group according to the control group (P<0.05).

Conclusion: Conventional physiotherapy applications combined with sensory integration training ameliorate postural control by improving sensory process. Therefore we consider that the treatment programs of the patients with explicit postural instability should include sensory integration training.
