Keywords: Acute exercise, nesfatin-1, ELISA method

Objective: Nesfatin-1 is a newly described as energy-regulating peptide via restricting food intake to body. It is also known that exercise is an effective method to regulate food intake and weight control. The effects of acute aerobic exercise on nesfatin-1 levels have not been clearly documented yet. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of aerobic exercise on the nesfatin-1 levels in normal male subjects.

Materials and Methods: Twenty five males exercised at approximately 60% of their heart rate reserve for about 45 min. Venous blood samples were drawn before and at the end of the exercise. Nesfatin-1 analysed using ELISA method.

Results: There were two different results in nesfatin-1 response: increase in 17 subjects and decrease in 8 subjects. However, when analysing all subjects data, there was no statistically significant difference (P=0.1) in nesfatin-1 levels at basal (134.0±5.8 pg/mL) and at the end of the exercise (144.2±6.8 pg/mL)

Conclusions: These results indicate that acute exercise has no positive or negative effects on nesfatin-1 levels. It should be considered that the observation of increases and decreases in nesfatin-1 levels during acute exercise may be the results of other factors rather than exercise itself.
