The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sodium fluoride on liver tissues in rabbits, which was given in drinking water in the doses of 10 and 40 ppm for 70 days. New Zealand strain, 21 male rabbits were used for this purpose. At the and of 70th day, blood samples taken from control and experimental groups (10 ppm and 40 ppm) were evaluated regarding the levels of plasma aspartat aminotransferase (AST), alanin aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) which are antioxidant enzymes in liver tissue and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutation peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutation reductase (GSH-Rd), catalase (CAT), glucose-6-phosfate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and the levels of malondialdehide (MDA). In the experimental groups (Groups II, III), the activities of LDH and MDA were increased significantly when they were compared to control. The activities of tissue SOD, GSH-Px, GSH-Rd, CAT were significantly increased in the group of 10 ppm, in contrast, there was significant decrease in the group of 40 ppm. The activity of G6PD was shown a decrease only in the group of 40 ppm. In both experimental groups, it was determined that fibrosis in the portal area of liver tissue and proliferation in bile canals, abnormal focal cellular infiltration in the periphery of lobe, dilatation in sinusoidal capillaries and hetochromatisme in the nuclei of hepatocytes which were much more severely occurred proportional to higher dose. On the other hand, there was significant increase in the levels of plasma flour.
