Keywords: Athletes, preparticipation sports examination, demographic analysis

Objective: Interest and participation in sports activities is rapidly increasing at all ages and genders as it does all around the world. There are various studies about demographic structure of participation to sports activities in western world. However, there is very limited research about this topic in our country. The very purpose of this study is to help to detect demographic features of examination applications before participation in sports activities.

Materials and Methods: Between the dates of May 1, 2016 and October 31, 2017 (within a period of one and a half year), 151 people who applied to a sport medicine clinic in Konya City in order to be examined before participating in sports activities and get a license, were evaluated in terms of age and gender.

Results: 87.4% of the applicants were male and 22.6% were female. 7.9% of the applicants were also under 18 years old (children). Minimum age was 10, while maximum age was 50. Average age of the males, females and children were 27.59±8.1, 23.26±4.3 and 13.41±3.2, respectively. It was 27.05±3.2 for the whole group of applicants.

Conclusion: It has been found out that the number of female and children applicants in examination for sports activities was less than expected and it was observed as a discordant fact with international literature. More research should be conducted about this case in our country. On the other hand, female, children and elders must be encouraged to participate more in sports activities.
