Spinal anesthesia has been commonly used in varicose vein surgery. However, temporary motor function deficits are seen in these patients in postoperative period. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effects of two differrent local anesthetics on motor functions after spinal anasthesia. 23 patients who had varicose vein surgery were included in this study. Group I, which includes 12 patients, received hyperbaric bupivacain and Group II, which includes 11 ones, received prilocain intratechally. Electromyographic evaluation of motor functions was performed preoperatively. It was also performed both in the first and third day postoperatively. For this purpose, interference pattern, H amplitude and H-latency periods were revealed. Interference pattern amplitudes of the first group decreased significantly in postoperative first day compared to the preoperative ones. They increased significantly in postoperative third day compared to first day. No change was determined between preoperative and postoperative interference patern amplitudes of the second group. No differences were seen neither on the values of H-amplitude nor on the values of H-latency in the both groups. In the light of this study, to provide good postoperative patient comfort and to conduct anesthetics safely, to search the effects of the other local anesthetics on the motor funtions might be quite important. We also concluded that short acting local anesthetics should be used in the surgical procedures that lasts short period of time.
