Investigation of Serum Vitamin B12 and Cobalt Levels in Different Sheep and Goats Breeds

The study aimed to investigate serum B12 and cobalt levels in male and female sheep and goats of different races. Within the scope of the study, 5 breeds including Akkaraman, Morkaraman and Awassi sheep breeds and Halep and Hair goats, which have similar care and feeding conditions in Elazig province, were included in the study. A total of 200 animals were used in the study, 40 animals of each breed. Groups of half of the animals in each group were female, half of them were male and half of them were under 1 year old and half of them were over 1 year old. Serum B12 vitamin level was determined using an autoanalyzer with the commercial test kits, and cobalt levels were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum cobalt levels were determined as 6.47±3.21, 5.68±2.50 and 7.75±1.67 ppb in sheep and 5.10±1.89 and 4.84±2.00 ppb in sheep, respectively in all sheep (Awassi, Akkaraman and Morkaraman) and goat (Hair and Halep goat) races. The difference between the groups was found to be significant (P<0.05). Serum B12 vitamin levels were determined as 691.35±445.87, 1432.77±452.13 and 1336.65±420.70 ppb in sheep, respectively, and the differences between the groups were found as 615.75±334.28 and 287.85±81.46 ppb, respectively (P<0.001). While the serum vitamin B12 level was higher than females at the level of P<0.01 in males of one-year-old Awassi breed sheep, both the other parameters (cobalt and clinical examination findings) in this race and the parameters examined in Akkaraman and Morkaraman breeds were not statistically significant (P>0.05). When the average values of serum B12 vitamin levels were evaluated from the age of females over one year old and male sheep, it was seen that the difference in Morkaraman race was not statistically significant (P>0.05), while it was higher in females in the level of P<0.001 and in the Akkaraman race. While it was determined that the difference between serum cobalt mean values between Akkaraman and Morkaraman breeds was not significant (P>0.05), it was observed that females (11.28±1.36 and 3.96±0.59 ppb, respectively) were higher than P<0.001. While the mean values of serum cobalt levels determined as 4.12±1.31 and 7.68±1.50 ppb respectively in female and male hair goats under one years of age were found to be significant at the level of P<0.001, the statistical difference between serum vitamin B12 levels in hair and Halep goats was not significant (P>0.05). In conclusion, although serum cobalt and B12 vitamin levels detected in Awassi, Akkaraman and Morkaraman sheep breeds and Halep and Hair goat races differed between regional breeding, race, gender and age groups, it was determined that there were no deficiency to lead to clinical symptoms.
