In the present study, the role of Bispectral index (BIS) in the evaluation of recovery of consciousness after single dose of thiopental and propofol was assessed.

A total of 30 patients with ASA I-II were divided into two groups forming the material of the study. The patients in group P received 2 mg/kg propofol and 5 mg/kg thiopental was given to group T. The moment that the patient could not grasp the hand of the examiner was considered as the loss of consciousness. After the loss of consciousness, pneumatic tourniquet was applied to the free arm and using 0.1 mg/kg vecuronium, patients were given 100 % oxygen by mask. The patient was asked to grasp the hand once more and this was recorded as BD. After BD, reinduction was performed and the tourniquet was removed.

The change of BIS at intergroup I, BK, MinBIS and BD values within two groups was found to be significant.

In conclusion, BIS is an effective monitorization method of the recovery of consciousness in cases where single dose propofol or thiopental are used.
