Keywords: Salpingectomy, ovarian cyst, dextrose, mannitol, ovarian reserve

Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of intracystic mannitol and hyperosmolar dextrose administration on cyst diameter and ovarian reserve in an ovarian cyst model

Materials and Methods: Thirty adult female Sprague Dawley rats were included in the study. Right salpingectomy was performed on all rats for ovarian cyst formation. One month later, the rats with ovarian cysts were randomly divided into three groups. The groups were organized as follows; Group (G) 1 in which only the cyst was aspirated, G2 cyst was aspirated and 20% mannitol was injected into the cyst, G3 cyst was aspirated and 30% dextrose was given into the cyst. A third laparotomy was performed 1 month later. The size of the cyst and the amount of intracystic fluid were recorded. Ovarian tissue taken by right oophorectomy was examined under light microscope and ovarian follicle reserve was counted. Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the groups.

Results: There was no significant difference between the 3 groups in the cyst size In histopathological examination, multiple atretic follicles, degenerated primordial follicles, and prominent vascular congestion in stromal vessels were distinguished in G1. Atretic follicle, degenerated primordial follicle were decreased in G2 and G3 groups, and follicles were more normal in appearance, especially in G2. When the histopathological changes were evaluated, a significant difference was observed between the groups.

Conclusion: In this study, it can be said that local dextrose and mannitol application did not affect the cyst size, and local mannitol application could have a relative prophylactic effect on the decreased ovarian reserve due to salpingectomy.
