Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of social restrictions applied to control the COVID-19 pandemic on the cervical smear screening program.

Materials and methods: Cervicovaginal smear numbers and epithelial cell anomalies and cervical biopsy results obtained from women who applied to the Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic between March-June 2020, when significant restrictions were imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic process were evaluated. These results were compared with the results between March and June 2019 as a control group.

Results: As a result of our study, cervical smears were taken from a total of 1288 patients between March and June 2019, and epithelial cell anomalies were detected in 184 cases. Between March and June 2020, smears were received from a total of 189 patients, and epithelial cell anomaly was detected in 29 cases. The number of smears and epithelial cell abnormalities between March and June 2020, when there were social restrictions due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, decreased significantly compared to March-June 2019

Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic have adversely affected cervical vaginal smear screening programs. This can lead to a significant increase in cases of invasive cervical cancer in the future. During pandemic periods, we think that smear screening programs should be continued by taking the necessary measures.
