Comparative Studies on the Repair of Nerve Defects by Autogenous Nerve Graft and Silicone Tubulisation in Rabbits

The aim of this study was the compare nerve graft and silicone tubulisation applications in large nerve tissue defect in order to determine which of the methods would give better results. 24 rabbits were used in the study. In four of the rabbits, only normal tibial nerve section was examined. Silicone tubulisation and nerve graft were applied to the remaining rabbits (10 for each application). N. cutaneus surae caudalis was used as graft, and a silicone tube at 1.2 mm diameter and 1 cm lenght, was used for silicone tubulisation. Five rabbits in each group were euthanized in the third month and sixth month, respectively, and samples were examined by electron microscopy.

When regeneration by graft and silicone tubulisation was compared, it was found that the regeneration of tissues treated with silicone tubulisation was much better. However it was thought that silicone tubulisation was approximate for small nerve defects (1 cm lenght) whereas nerve graft application would be suitable for larger nerve defects, in light of previous studies which reported that silicone tubulisation was not appropriate for nerve defects larger than 1 cm, and that nerve graft could be used in larger nerve defects up to 10-12 cm.
