Although pelvic fractures are only 3% of all fractures; they are common and often devastating injuries. Along with a high mortality, the long-term morbidity is consequential for both the individual patient and society. With this study; we aimed to contribute to the data about pelvic fracture and share our experiences. Data was obtained from the patients that applied to Emergency Medicine Department of Firat University who diagnosed as pelvic fracture from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2000. A computer program (SPSS 12.00) was used for statistical analysis. We reviewed outcomes of 142 patients; 35 women (24.6%) and 107 man (75.4%).There was a statistically significant difference between two genders (<0.05). The mean age was 38±1.42 years. Patients applied to emergency department 465.93±208.93 minutes after trauma. The causes of traumas are as follows: motor vehicle accident (62.7%), downfall (26.4%) and other injuries (10.6%). While 32.4% of all fractures were only pelvic, 67.6% were together with other traumas (extremity trauma, (28.2%); abdominal trauma (19%); head trauma (9.2%); thorax trauma (7.7%) and others (3.5%). 21 patients (14.8%) were treated with blood transfusion. The mean time that patients stayed at emergency service was 191.47±7.54 minutes. While 133 patients (93.7%) discharged from a hospital, 4 patients (2.8 %) died. As a result, we can say that, mostly young population was affected from pelvic trauma. Because mortality is so high, diagnosis and treatment strategies must be aggressive and multidisciplinary.
