In this retrospective study we examined the patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation for hydrocephalius in our clinic, we analyzed the rates of shunt disfunction.

Etiologies, clinical datas, causative factors for complications, and follow-up registries of 75 patients who underwent ventrikuloperitoneal shunt operation between January 2005-January 2007 in Firat University Hospital Department of Neurosurgery were examined. The average follow-up time was 15 months.

Shunt dysfunction had developed in 25 of the 75 patients whom were examined. Shunt revision was made ın this 25 patients because of Shunt obstruction (ventricular catheter occlusion ) in 9 , Shunt infection in 7, CSF collection under skin in 5, skin nekrosis in 2, subdural effusion in 1, and incorrect placement of ventricular catheter in 1 patient.

Despite all developments, hydrocephalus is an illness which has high morbidity and mortality. Ventrikuloperitoneal shunt application is the still the first choice of the surgical treatment of hydrocephalus. So, our target should be examining the shunt complications and be finding ways to lower the rates of shunt dysfunction.
