ESWL is a noninvasive method which used for treatment of urinary system calculi for nearly twenty years. Generally, histopathology, biochemistry, radionuclide and radiologic methods are preferred to determine the effects of ESWL on kidney and blood flow. In this study, we aimed to determine the short term effects of ESWL on renal blood flow and related changes of arterial blood pressure.

This study consisted of 42 patients aged 11–60 years. Power Doppler US performed to calculus containing kidney 1 hour before and 1 hour after ESWL. Resistive index, pulsatility index, acceleration time, systolic and diastolic velocities of kidney; resistive index, pulsatility index and systolic/diastolic velocity of aorta; systemic arterial systolic and diastolic blood pressures were evaluated comparatively.

Resistive index showed increase in calculi containing kidney after ESWL. Pulsatility index of aorta was showed increase after ESWL. Pulsatility index decreased in calculi containing kidney after ESWL. In all patients, systolic blood pressures showed increase after ESWL.

ESWL is a method which is superior to surgery used for treatment of urinary system calculi. In this study; we discussed effects of ESWL on renal blood flow in early period. In this conclusion, calculi containing kidney affected after ESWL.
