Keywords: Lung cancer, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), radiation, radiotherapy

In this study we tried to define alteration in levels of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme depend on radiotherapy. Therefore, we used treatment time-effect relationship, and to correlate these data with statistical parameters.

The study includes 20 lung cancer patients. Venous blood was obtained from each patients and the serum was separated from the whole blood after centrifugation process. Total ALP levels in serum samples was determined using autoanalyser.

As a result, a significant difference was not observed in serum ALP levels from lung cancer patients before radiotherapy when compared with the controls. However, in all patients except 6, 12 and 20, there was an alteration in ALP levels during the radiotherapy depending on treatment time of radiation. Experimental data showed that ALP levels increased significantly at the end of one week radiation treatment and exhibited a decreasing trend at the end of second, third, fourth and fifth weeks.

Consequently, it is shown that ALP is a useful biomarker for determination of biochemical alterations induced by radiation
