The Satisfaction Levels of Patients Receiving Outpatient and Clinic Service from Department of Ophthalmology of Medical Faculty of Firat University

The present study was conducted to determine the satisfaction levels of the patients who received outpatient and clinic services in the Department of Ophthalmology of Firat University.

Six hundred and two patients were included into this cross-sectional study. Of the patients 483 of them were provided outpatient service and 119 received in-patient treatment between September and December of 2007 n the Department of Ophthalmology.

Of the outpatient service receiving patients, 53% of them were male, 6.2% of them were not graduates of any school and 45.8% were married whereas, 42.9% of clinic patients were male, 18.5% were not graduates of any school and 68.9% of them were married. The reasons for seeking treatment in Department of Ophthalmology in our clinic were the expectation of getting higher quality service from the experts in 61.9 % of the cases, expectation of having a better investigation of the causes of the disease in 46.4% of cases and receiving more attention and allocation of more time to the patients in 17.0%. Patients received outpatient services expressed their degree of satisfaction related to the attitudes and behaviors of the physicians and nurses as 95.3% and 90.2%, respectively, whereas the degree of satisfaction for their treatment results were 95.4%. All patients graduated from primary schools were satisfied with the physical conditions of the hospital whereas 86.4% of patients graduated from universities were satisfied.

Although the satisfaction level of the patients was found to be high in our study, it was determined that there was insufficiency in terms of physical conditions of the hospital and in communication between the patients and our health workers.
