The Photoprotective Effect of Topikal Vitamin E Against Ultraviole B Irradiation in Guinea Pigs: Solar-induced cutaneous damage is mediated partly via oxidative pathways. The aim of this study to assess the influence of topical applications of the vitamin E immediately after ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation and for three weeks before UVB irradiation on the cutaneous antioxidant capacity. In this study 56 albino guinea pigs were used. Lipid peroxide (LPO) levels were determined in the skin, liver, plasma and erythrocytes and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the skin and erythrocytes, glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) in the skin and erythrocytes, reduced glutathione (GSH) in the erythrocytes. In generall, LPO levels were significantly increased and SOD activities de-creased by using UVB. This values returned to normal levels by application of vitamin E. As a result, we consider that both topical applications of the vitamin E immediately after of UVB irradiation and for three weeks before UVB irradiation are effective in protecting the skin against UVB irradiation.
