Objective: Upper gastrointestinal system endoscopy is both a diagnostical and therapeutical
intervention. The aim is to evaluate the results of upper gastrintestinal system endoscopies
undertaken to the children from a single center, retrospectively
Material and methods: The pathological, endoscopical results of the 357 children who underwent endoscopical intervention between November 2007 and January 2010 are evaluated. Results: 357 children underwent endoscopy in 27 months. The complaints of the children were abdominal pain, failure to thrive, nausea/vomiting, upper gastrointestinal system bleeding. Before endoscopy 307 out of 340 patients were Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) positive. Endoscopical findings were gastritis, ulcer, esophagitis and flat duodenal folds. 80.8% of the patients with ulcers were H. pylori positive and 57.4 % of the ulcers were gastric. Intestinal metaplasia was seen in 2 patients, and dissappeared after eradication therapy. Two patients were diagnosed as Celiac disease after pathological evaluation. Conclusion: H. pylori is common in our region and thus among children. Gastritis and peptic ulcer is common among children. Appropriate cases should undergo pediatric gastroenterological and endoscopical evaluation. |
