Keywords: Brimonidine, dorzolamide, intraocular pressure, latanoprost, primary open-angle glaucoma

Objectives: It was aimed to examine the effects of topical drug treatments of brimonidine tartrate 0.5%/ timolol maleate 0.2% (BTSK), latanoprost 0.005/timolol% maleate 0.5% (LTSK) maleate and dorzolamide hydrochloride 0.2%/timolol maleate 0.5% (DTSK) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

Materials and Methods: A total of 58 patients (116 eyes) with the diagnosis of POAG assigned randomly to three groups [group 1 (BTSK), n1=18 patients (34 eyes); group 2 (DTSK), n2=20 patients (34 eyes) and group 3 (LTSK), n3= 20 patients (38 eyes)] were enrolled in the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine, Pamukkale University between February and July, 2009. Mean IOP values of the patients before the initiation of drugs and two months after drugs administration were recorded and compared with each other.

Results: Mean IOP values in the previous day of the drugs initiation were 22.38±2.07 mmHg for group 1, 23.12±3.01 mmHg for group 2 and 22.64± 2.81 for group 3 mmHg, respectively. The mean values of IOP obtained from the second month from group 1 to group 3 were founded as 14.32 ± 1.98, 14.51 ± 2.14 and 14.62 ± 1.84 mmHg, respectively. For all the three groups, a statistically significant difference was not determined in IOP measurements of the beginning and the second month of the study (P> 0.05). In all groups, mean IOP values obtained in the second month showed a statistically significant decrease when compairing with those in the beginning (P <0.001).

Conclusion: In our study, IOP values were regressed to the desired levels by using each of the three drugs. All three drugs have similar effects on IOP.
