Although transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) has been used for many years, there are significant improvements in that area, related to the rapid development in the ultrasound machines used. A total of 125 patients, between ages of 45-70, who had prostatism symptoms were screened according to malignancy criteria of TRUS. Their serum pros-tate spesific antigen levels were determined and the sonographic diagnosis histopathologically confirmed by TRUS guided biopsy histopathologically.

Malignancy is histopathologically proved in 42 cases out of 125. Serum PSA levels were above 4 ng/ml in 38 of these cases who proved to be malignant histologically. PSA levels were between 4-10 ng/ml in10 and below 4 ng/ml in 73 of 83 cases who were benign histologically. Sensitivity and specificity of TRUS in diagnosis of prostatic cancer were 83% and 78%, respectively. Also sensitivity and specificity of PSA level in diagnosis of prostatic cancer were 90% and 87%, respectively. It is concluded that TRUS and serum PSA levels should be used together in diagno-sis of prostatic cancer and these methods are very helpful in determining the indication and the necessity of biopsy.
