Keywords: Propofol, esmolol, sedation

Objective: The anesthesia of patients undergoing ambulatory surgery, should be deep enough to provide a fast wake up as well as providing smooth induction to create adequate surgical conditions. Intravenous (iv) anesthetics used with opioids and nonsteroidal analgesics for the purpose of sedation and analgesia during curettage. The aim of this study was to determine the efefects of esmolol use on dose of propofol in patients with probe curettage.

Material and Methods: A total of 40 female patients, American Society of Anaesthesia (ASA) I, scheduled for probe curettage were randomly divided into two groups. The patients in Group I were given 2-2.5 mg/kg propofol and 25 μg fentanyl, Group II: 1mg/kg/min esmolol, 1-1.25 mg/kg propofol ve 25 μg fentanyl. Total propofol dose, mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), peripheral O2 saturation (SpO2), were recorded.

Results: No statistically significant differences were seen between the MAP and SpO2 values between the two groups (p>0.05), however, HR were significantly lower in the propofol+esmolol Group. After drug injection 88.47± 6.84 beats/min in Group I, 80.57± 7.95 beats/min in Group II (P<0.05). HR were 85.94± 10.57 beats/min in Group I, 75.57± 8.10 beats/min in Group II at 5 th min, 86.17± 9.68 beats/min in Group I, 74.50± 9.14 beats/min in Group II at 10 th min, 85.73± 9.91 beats/min in group I, 74.23± 9.81 beats/min in Group II at 15 th min (P<0.01). Propofol consumption was significantly lower in the group II when compared with the group I,.propofol dose were 162.94± 27.56 mg in group I, 91.78 ± 13.81 mg in group II (P<0.01).

Conclusion: We demonstrated that the adjunctive use of esmolol in combination with propofol reduced the hemodynamic response and used propofol amount in the sedation during curettage.
