Keywords: Circumcision, postoperative pain, FLACC scoring

Objective: It was aimed to retrospectively investigate the results of mass circumcision and compare the anesthesia techniques applied for circumcision in terms of postoperative pain according to the pain questionnaire form scores filled by the clinical follow-up nurse to determine the postoperative analgesia regimen for each patient.

Materials and Methods: A total of 142 children aged 0-12 who were circumcised by entering the operation list of a single urologist were divided into 2 groups according to the anesthesia method they received. Group 1: Sedation + Local anesthesia group (n=77), Group 2 (Control): Local anesthesia group (n=65). The relationship between the anesthesia methods applied to the children peroperatively and postoperative pain was examined retrospectively.

Results: The mean FLACC scale scores for Group 1 were calculated as 3.35±1.21 at the first hour, 5.26±1.57 at the second hour and 6.78±1.69 at the third hour. The scores calculated for Group 2 were recorded as 4.14±1.19 at the first hour, 7.47±1.33 at the second hour and 8.22±1.57 at the third hour. When the groups were correlated with the measurement times, a significant increase in pain scores was observed in both groups (p<0.05). When the scale scores made at the second and third postoperative hours were examined, the scores of Group 2 were found to be significantly higher (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Postoperative pain was found to be lower in children who underwent the procedure under general+local anesthesia compared to children who underwent the procedure under local anesthesia only.
