Acute dystonic reaction is an extrapyramidal side effect induced by drug use, manifested by involuntary muscular contractions, which start suddenly in neck, jaw, facial or tongue muscles. This side effect is mostly observed with typical antipsychotic drugs which bind strongly to D2 receptors. Since Aripiprazole is a partial agonist of D2 and 5HT1a receptors, its risk of exhibiting extrapyramidal side effects is lower than other antipsychotics. This article aims to present a bipolar female patient that developed aripiprazole-induced acute dystonia, where the symptoms decreased rapidly after discontinuation of the drug.
