Objective: This study aims to compare hospitals working on mental health and determine the factors related to internalized stigma.

Materials and Methods: 100 patients who visited Elazığ Mental Health Hospital’s and 63 patients who visited Adıyaman Research Training Hospital’s psychiatry clinics between August 2016 and October 2016 were included. Diagnosis interview was conducted by the psychiatrist using Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I). The patients were asked to fill a socio-demographic data form, the Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) Scale, the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI) Scale was filled by the patient.

Results: No relationship was found between the internalized stigma level and patients’ variables regarding age, sex, marital status, education level, occupation, employment, living space (urban/rural), family history of psychiatric disorder, diagnosis distribution and CGI scores. In the comparison of groups, the duration of disorders were significantly longer in the mental health hospital. In the groups assigned one to one based on length of disorder, the level of internalized stigma for the mental health hospital group was significantly higher than the level for the research and training hospital.

Conclusion: Determination of the high levels of internalized stigma in the mental health hospital showed the importance of the fight against internalized stigma by professionals in the field of mental health. Reducing internalized stigma, which is a risk factor that may affect the adaptation and treatment process negatively, will make adaptation to treatment easier and increase the quality of life.
