Pediatric Pseudotumor Cerebri Syndrome with Etiological and Clinical Features

Objective: Pseudotumor cerebri is a clinical syndrome characterized by increased intracranial pressure in the absence of an intracranial mass. This article will address recent findings regarding clinical presentations, possible causes, and outcomes of children with pseudotumor cerebri according to their age group.

Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of children diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri in order to compare demographic characteristics, clinical pictures as well as co-morbidities in March 2011 to October 2018.

Results: During the study period a total of 14 children with pseudotumor cerebri were identified. Ranging from 8 months to 17 years, 57.1% of the patients were prepubertal age group. The most common presenting symptom was visual complaints (87.5%) in prepubertal age group and headache (100%) in pubertal age group. Vitamin D deficiency (57.1%) and obesity (35.7%) were the common comorbidities respectively in this study. Acetazolamide was the first choice of the treatment modality in this study. Two of our patients underwent unilateral optic nerve sheath fenestration one of them had vision loss due to optic atrophy.

Conclusion: Pseudotumor cerebri present with different complaints instead of headache more frequently among prepubertal age children. Children can sustain loss of visual field especially prepubertal age. Physicians should be aware of the pseudotumor cerebri and its complications in this age group.
