The hemoglobin level of the pregnant women below 11gr/dl is regarded as the indication of anemia by WHO. In this study, a total number of 490 individuals were randomly selected among 2282 pregnant women living in Elazığ city center, to determine the prevalence and risk factors of anemia and to rekindle interest in this subject.Among the study population, information was gathered from 465 pregnant women, giving a response rate of 95%. The sample was randomised according to 16 health care centers present in the city centre, taking population size, in each location, into consideration.

Of the pregnant women participated in the study, mean age was 26.32 (SD:5.33) and the mean pregnancy week was 24.37 (SD:8.47). Anemia (Hb level below 11g/dl) was detected in 42.4%(197 persons) of pregnant women.Among the pregnant women with anemia, 44.8% was within the first trimestr, 41.6% within the second trimestr, 42.4% within the third trimestr (p>0.05).

The frequency of anemia in pregnant women at the age of 19 years or below was 59.4%, whereas it was 40.8% in pregnant women between the age of 20-29 years, 39.5% in persons between the ages of 30-39 years and 25.0% in pregnant women at the of 40 years or above.

When the frequency of anemia was examined according to the number of pregnancy, the proportions of 41.1%, 42.0% and 43.3% were obtained in the first, second and the third or above pregancies, respectively.

The results obtained in this study indicate that the prevalence of anemia is considerably higher in pregnant women living in the centre of Elazığ and that a priority should be given to the education and services on this matter.
