Keywords: C-reactive protein, hemodialysis, low molecular weight heparin, standard heparin, serum iron

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the patients treated with standard heparin and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in terms of clinical and laboratory parameters.

Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, 20 patients treated with standard heparin were compared to 48 patients treated with LMWH.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 58.13±14.43 years and 48.53% were male. The mean dialysis vintage was 5.07±4.01 years and the percentage of patients with diabetic nephropathy was 51.47%. There was no statistically significant difference between two groups in terms of age, gender, primary kidney disease, dialysis vintage, serum ferritin, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein, total cholesterol, triglyceride, hemoglobin, ferritin, parathormone, calcium, phosphorus levels, urea reduction rate, Kt/V, doses of erythropoietin and intravenous iron used, hospitalization and mortality (P≥0.05). Patients treated with standard heparin had significantly higher total iron-binding capacity (P:0.00), serum iron (P:0.01) and potassium levels (P:0.01) and significantly lower transferrin saturation (P:0.04) and C-reactive protein (P:0.00) level when compared to patients treated with LMWH.

Conclusion: Patients treated with standard heparin had significantly higher serum iron and potassium levels and significantly lower transferrin saturation and C-reactive protein level when compared to patients treated with LMWH. No statistically significant difference was detected in terms of lipid parameters, hemoglobin, dialysis adequacy and bone mineral parameters.
