Objective The research was aimed to determine the effects of coughing and virtual reality methods, which are the methods of distraction, on the pain, anxiety and satisfaction levels experienced by the individual.

Materials and Methods: 287 individuals who applied to the blood collection unit participated in the study. Individuals were randomly assigned to cough, virtual reality and control groups. Data were collected from individuals using the "Patient Information Form", "Visual Pain Scale", "Visual Anxiety Scale", "Visual Patient Satisfaction Scale" and " State Anxiety Inventory" (SAI). The study was conducted as an experimental study in a randomized-controlled factorial design.

Results: The pain and anxiety levels of the individuals in the coughing and virtual reality group were lower than the control group; satisfaction levels were found to be higher than the control group (p<0.05). Post-intervention SAI scores of all groups were significantly lower than pre-intervention SAI scores; it was determined that the highest decrease occurred in virtual reality, coughing and control groups, respectively.

Conclusion: It was concluded that coughing and virtual reality methods are effective methods of pain and anxiety management in bloodletting attempt and increase the satisfaction level of the individuals.
