Incidence of Coronary Risk Factors and Importance of Feeding Habits on Atherosclerosis Development in Elazığ Region

In this study, we aimed to research incidence of coronary risk factors and importance of feeding habits on atherosclerosis development in Elazığ region.

405 patients (Group-II) who consume regional food (butter, meat braised in its own fat, brine cheese and cheese encased in a skin etc. ) and 595 patients (Group-1) were involved from other regions.

Age, sex, height, weight, atherosclerotic family history, feeding habits, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, life style, smoking, alcohol, living places and blood lipids of the patients were evaluated according to region, sex, age groups and feeding habits.

Total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-K, smoking, alcohol consumption and ischaemic ECG findings were higher in males (p<0.001) and obesity is higher in females (p<0.001). There was no difference according to other risk factors between sex groups.

When the cases were evaluated according to places, only hypertension is significantly higher in Elazığ centre. Other parameters will not show any difference according to places.

As a result, lipid parameters, coronary artery risk factors and coronary artery disease are higher than average of Turkey.

Beside the scientific studies, the education of the regional people for the primary and secondary prevention methods of coronary artery disease, changing the feeding habits may decrease incidence of coronary artery disease and related deaths.
