In the present study, we aimed to examine the relationship between serum Paraoxonase (PON1), Arylesterase (ARE) activity levels, PON phenotypes and other lipid parameters in different subjects with Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) etiology. The study groups were consisted of 185 patients (80 CHD patients, 20 hypertensive patients, 30 angina pectoris patients, 40 NIDDM patients and 15 excessive smokers) (mean age: 53.2±10.35 yr) and a control group with 90 healthy individuals (mean age: 47.8±11.2 yr). Serum PON1, PON1 (+NaCl), ARE activities and other lipid parameters were determined in both groups. The ratio of PON1 (+NaCl) /ARE activity was taken as criterion in determining the phenotype. There were statistically significant differences in PON1, PON1 (+NaCl) and ARE activities in CHD group, hypertensive patients, NIDDM patients and smokers compared to the control group (p<0.05). We determined 3 phenotypes in control and patient groups. There was no significant difference between PON1 activity and other measured parameters in the low activity PON phenotypic [phenotype AA] CHD patients (p>0.05); whereas statistically significant relationships were determined between serum PON1 activity and HDL levels in the high activity PON phenotypic [phenotype BB] CHD patients (p<0.05). In conclusion; the measurement of serum PON1 activity known the most important parameters for diagnosis of CHD, as well as serum lipids, was determined as significant biochemical indicators in respect to CHD and etiologic risk factors.
