Investigation of the Relationship Between Flatfoot, Pain, Hypermobility and Balance in Healthy Young Adults

Objective: Flatfoot is a health problem affecting 5% of young adults. Musculo-skeletal pains arise due to flatfoot. Hypermobility, balance and coordination disorders are accompanied by musculo-skeletal pain in individuals having a flatfoot. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between flatfoot, pain, hypermobility and balance in healthy, young adults aged 18 to 24 years.

Material and Methods: A total of 68 individuals, 35 female and 33 male, were included. Demographic informations of all individuals were recorded. Flatfoot degree with Feiss line method, general joint hypermobility with Beighton hypermobility score, pain with visual analog scale (VAS) and balance performance with single leg balance test were assessed.

Results: The individuals’ mean age was 19.97±1.23 years, pain levels revealed 1.03±0.90, Beighton hypermobility scores were 3.24±2.41, balance performances were observed as 55.60±15.12 seconds. By the patients, flatfood was detected in 64.7% in the first degree, 26.5% in the second degree and 8.8% in the third degree. A statistically significant correlation was found between the PP degree and the pain levels of individual, positively (r= 0.493; P= 0.015). There was no significant relationship between PP degree and hypermobility (r= 0.083; P= 0.503) and PP degree and balance performance (r= -0.012; P= 0.922).

Conclusion: According to the results of this study, there was a correlation between PP and pain, but no correlation was found between PP and general joint hypermobility and balance performance scores.
