Keywords: Diabetes, pomegranate flower, hyperlipidemia

Objective: Our study has been conducted in order to investigate the diabetes induced complication reducing and antihyperlipidemic effects of pomegranate flower in antioxidant doses by experimentally streptozosin (STZ) induced diabetic rats.

Materials and Methods: A total of 60 male Wistar-albino rats weighing 220 g (220±40g) were used in the experimental study. Experimental applications lasted 6 weeks. Group 1. Control group consisting of 12 rats fed with feed and water. Group 2: Diabetes (STZ) group. STZ in a single dose with intraperitoneal injection as 60 mg/kg was administered. Rats were considered diabetic 48 hour after the end of the fasting blood glucose level of 220 mg/dL. Only feed + water was given every day. Group 3: STZ + pomegranate flower I. Diabetic rats were fed orally with 300 mg/kg/day of pomegranate flower on a regular basis daily Group 4: STZ + Pomegranate flower II. Diabetic rats were given 400 mg/kg/day of pomegranate flower regularly every day. Group 5: STZ + Pomegranate flower III. Diabetic rats were given 500 mg/kg/day of pomegranate flowers regularly. After experimental applications, the blood of the decapitated rats was taken into biochemical tubes and centrifuged at 5000 g for 5 min. The results were obtained on the instrument.

Results: In blood serum of diabetic rats compared to control, diabetic rats had higher levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL- C) values were found to be low and were discussed in the literature.

Conclusion: It was observed that pomegranate flower reduces diabetes associated complications and hyperlipidemia because of its content of polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids with atioxidant features.
