Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate the necessity of mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) application before coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery and its effect on postoperative variables.

Materials and Methods: 157 patients who underwent elective isolated CABG surgery between January 2015 and May 2021 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into two groups; those with preoperative MBP (Group I) and those without MBP (Group II). They were compared in terms of demographic data, laboratory parameters, and clinical characteristics (operational variables and early postoperative variables).

Results: 111 of the cases were in Group I and 46 of them were in Group II. The male sex ratio in Group I was found to be significantly higher than Group II (p<0.001). A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups in preoperative liver function tests (p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate parameters with significant differences between the groups (Gender, Hyperlipidemia, Smoking, AST, ALT), but no significant correlation was observed (p<0.05). In terms of clinical and early postoperative variables, there was not difference between the two groups (intensive care and hospital stay, extubation period, gastrointestinal system complications).

Conclusion: This is the first study to show that preoperative MBP has no effect on gastrointestinal system complications in elective CABG surgery. These findings of our study investigating the preoperative MBP procedure indicate that prospective clinical studies are needed.
