Keywords: Lung, ovary transplantation, ıschemia-reperfusion, gallic acid, curcumin

Objective: The aim of this study is to histopathologically examine the effects of gallic acid (GA) and curcumin (CUR) on the lung in ischemia damage developed in experimental autologous intraperitoneal ovarian transplantation in rats.

Materials and Methods: 11-12 weeks old, 42 Sprague Dawley female rats were divided into 6 groups (n=7). In the control group (Group 1), only the abdomen was opened, observed and sutured, while in Group 2, ovarian transplantation was performed. Groups 3, 4, 5, and 6 were given corn oil (CO) (0.5ml/day), CUR (100mg/kg/day), GA (20mg/kg/day) and GA and CUR (20mg/kg/day and 100mg/kg/day, respectively) were given by oral gavage 1 day before and 14 days after ovarian transplantation, respectively. Animals were sacrificed on the 14th postoperative day. Lung tissues were examined light microscopically.

Results: It was observed histopathologically that GA and CUR single and combined treatment reduced intraalveolar and intravascular mononuclear leukocyte infiltration, hemorrhage and necrosis developed by ischemia in lungs during ovarian transplantation. In Group 2 and Group 3, the number of mast cells (MC) was significantly increased compared to Group 1 (p<0.000). The decrease in the number of MCs in Group 6 was significant compared to Group 2 (p<0.021) and Group 3 (p<0.006). In addition, the increase in the number of MCs in Group 4 was significant compared to Group 1 (p<0.018).

Conclusion: It was observed that the combined use of GA and CUR created a synergistic effect and significantly reduced the pathological findings of lung damage due to ischemia as a result of ovarian transplantation. The combined use of GA and CUR may have more protective and therapeutic effects than its separate use.
