Keywords: Uric acid, plasma atherogenic index, parathormon, hemodialysis

Objective: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with end-stage renal failure (ESRD). In dialysis patients; vascular damage is more common than the general population due to hyperuricemia, hypoalbuminia, dyslipidemia, inflammation, oxidative stress and vascular calcification. In this study, we examined the relationship between atherogenic index, uric acid (UA) levels and parathormone (PTH), noninvasive laboratory methods for cardiovascular risk in dialysis patients.

Materials and Methods: Our retrospective study included 91 dialysis patients, 18 years of age and over. Patients according to parathormone (PTH) level were categorized as: low (PTH<136) as Group-1, target range (136≤ PTH<612) as Group-2, and high (PTH≥612) as Group-3. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS22.0 and the statistical significance level was considered as P<0.05.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 53.48±18.41 and 49.5% (n=45) were female. In comparison, the groups differed in terms of UA levels (P<0.05). Group-1 UA level was lower than Group-2 (P<0.05) and Group-3 UA level was lower than Group-1 (P<0.05). Group-2 and 3 had similar UA levels (P>0.05). Compared with plasma atherogenic index (PAI) levels, there was no significant difference between the groups (P>0.05).

Conclusion: In our study, the target PTH group had the lowest UA levels compared to other groups, PTH and UA levels were correlated. There was no correlation between PTH and PAI, PTH groups had similar PAI levels, but although not significant, PAI levels increased from Group-1 to Group-3.
